BLS for Nurses
Nurses are the largest single group we certify, and for good reason: in almost every hospital and clinic in the Emirates a current BLS card is a condition of employment, and it is a nurse who is most often first at the bedside when a patient deteriorates. This page covers what the requirement means for nursing staff specifically, what the course adds to what you already know, and how to fit it around a roster.
UAE healthcare employers generally require every clinical nurse to hold a current Basic Life Support certification, most commonly an American Heart Association BLS Provider card, and to keep it current on a two-year cycle. It is checked at onboarding, at credentialling and at licence renewal, and an expired card is treated as a compliance issue rather than a formality. For nurses arriving from abroad, an AHA card obtained in another country remains valid to its expiry date — you do not need to recertify on arrival simply because you have changed country. What you do need is for it to be in date when checked, and to renew it here when it comes due.

This is the real obstacle for nursing staff, and it is why most nurses booking with us choose the HeartCode blended route. The knowledge portion is completed online in your own time, in short pieces if that is what the week allows, and the only thing that has to be scheduled is a hands-on skills slot with an instructor. Sessions at our Al Reem Island centre run between 09:00 and 17:00, so a slot can usually be found either side of a shift.
Where a whole unit is due at once, on-site delivery is almost always the better answer — instructors, manikins and AED trainers come to the hospital and the department is certified without anybody leaving the building. Senior nurses who lead or join an arrest call usually go on to ACLS, and staff in paediatric, neonatal or emergency areas to PALS. Both assume competent BLS and both test it, so renew the BLS first if the dates are close together — the difference in how the advanced course feels is substantial. The comparison is on BLS vs ACLS.

An American Heart Association card issued in another country remains valid until its expiry date and is recognised here, because AHA cards are verifiable internationally. You renew it in the UAE when it comes due rather than recertifying on arrival.
