BLS for Doctors & Dentists
Doctors, dentists and pharmacists in the UAE are routinely asked for a current BLS certificate — at hiring, when privileges are granted and when a licence is renewed. For most of them, AHA BLS is the baseline, with ACLS or PALS on top for those in acute or paediatric roles.
In short
Most UAE facilities expect every doctor and dentist to hold a current AHA BLS card, renewed every two years. Doctors in acute specialties usually add ACLS, and those who treat children add PALS. Dental clinics offering sedation often need an advanced life support holder on site too.
BLS is the minimum for any physician with patient contact, including outpatient and family medicine. Emergency, anaesthesia, cardiology, critical care and internal medicine doctors usually need ACLS as well, and paediatric and emergency doctors add PALS. For dental practices the realistic emergencies are fainting, allergic reactions, breathing problems during sedation and, rarely, cardiac arrest. Dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants are commonly required to hold BLS, and practices that provide sedation should check their licensing conditions for advanced life support cover. We run on-site BLS for whole dental teams so the practice only closes for one session.
Hospital and community pharmacists, physiotherapists, radiographers and laboratory staff are increasingly asked for BLS, especially in facilities where every clinical staff member is on the emergency response plan.
DOH in Abu Dhabi, DHA in Dubai and MOHAP in the other emirates license professionals, and facilities add their own credentialling rules. Requirements vary by licence category and change over time, so check the current position with the regulator or your facility.
