BLS Renewal

BLS Renewal and Recertification

An American Heart Association BLS Provider card is valid for two years from the month of issue, and there is no grace period written into it — on the first day of the twenty-fifth month it is simply expired. Renewing means taking a BLS Provider course again and being reassessed on the manikin. This page covers when to book, what to do if you have already let it lapse, and how the renewal runs at our Abu Dhabi centre.

When to renew

Book at around the twenty-month mark, not the twenty-fourth. Two reasons. First, a renewed card runs from the new issue date, so renewing a little early costs you nothing in coverage. Second, employers and licensing renewals ask for a card that is current on the day they check, and leaving it to the final fortnight means a full class or a delayed date can put you temporarily out of compliance.

If you have ACLS or PALS due in the same window, renew the BLS first. Those courses assume competent basic life support and are noticeably easier when it is fresh.

What renewal involves

The AHA does not offer a shortened "refresher" that skips assessment. Renewal is the BLS Provider course again: the material, the practice and the skills test. In practice a candidate who has been using the skills moves through it faster and more confidently than a first-timer, but the standard applied at the manikin is identical.

Most people renewing choose the HeartCode blended route: the cognitive portion online at their own pace, then a short hands-on skills session for the sign-off. It is the least disruptive option for anyone on a clinical roster.

If your card has already expired

You retake the full BLS Provider course. There is no separate remedial or late-renewal pathway, and the course you book is exactly the same one — so an expired card is not a disaster, it is simply an ordinary booking.

The complication is employment rather than training. Many UAE hospitals treat an expired BLS card as non-compliance and may restrict clinical duties until it is back in date. If you are already past the expiry, book the earliest available session rather than waiting for a convenient one; live seat counts for each date are shown on the BLS course page.

Renewing a card issued somewhere else

You do not have to renew with the centre that trained you, and an AHA card issued anywhere in the world can be renewed here. Bring the card or the eCard code with you. If you were originally certified under a different system — a Red Cross, Resuscitation Council or in-house hospital programme — you are not renewing so much as certifying afresh with the AHA, which is the same course and the same price either way.

Renewing a whole department

If a group of staff came due at the same time, they will usually expire at the same time too. On-site group renewal is normally the cheapest and least disruptive answer: we bring instructors, manikins and AED trainers to your hospital or clinic and recertify the department in a day. Email training@safetyfirstmed.ae with the headcount and the expiry month and we will build the dates around it.

Keep the eCard somewhere you can find it

AHA cards are issued electronically with a verification code that an employer or regulator can check directly with the American Heart Association. Save the email, and note the expiry month somewhere you will actually see it. The single most common reason people end up retraining in a hurry is not forgetting the course — it is losing track of the date.

Frequently asked questions

How often do I need to renew my BLS certification?

Every two years. An AHA BLS Provider card is valid for two years from the month of issue, and renewal means taking the BLS Provider course again and being reassessed on the manikin.

What happens if my BLS card has expired?

You take the full BLS Provider course again. There is no late-renewal or remedial pathway, and no penalty from the training side. The practical issue is with your employer, since many UAE hospitals treat an expired card as non-compliance and may restrict clinical duties until it is renewed.

Can I renew a BLS card that was issued in another country?

Yes. An American Heart Association card issued anywhere can be renewed at an AHA training centre in the UAE. Bring the card or the eCard code. If your original certificate came from a different awarding body you simply take the AHA BLS Provider course, which is the same course either way.
