Online BLS (HeartCode)
You can do the thinking part of BLS online. You cannot do the doing part online, and any provider that tells you otherwise is selling a certificate your employer will refuse. The American Heart Association solves this with HeartCode: a blended course where the knowledge, video and scenario work happens on your own screen at your own pace, and a short hands-on session with an instructor covers the skills that have to be watched.
The short answer
HeartCode blended BLS splits the course in two. You complete the AHA online modules at your own pace, then attend a short in-person skills session where an instructor assesses your compressions, ventilations and AED use on a manikin. The card you receive is identical to the classroom one. A fully online BLS certificate with no practical assessment is not an AHA card and UAE employers reject it.
That last point is worth underlining. A HeartCode blended card and a classroom card are the same card. There is no annotation saying you took the online route, and nothing an employer or regulator can distinguish between them.
Because compression depth, chest recoil and effective ventilation are physical skills, and no screen can tell whether you are pushing hard enough. The manikins used at the skills session measure depth, rate and recoil, and the instructor watches for the things a machine misses — hand position drifting, leaning on the chest between compressions, over-inflating on the bag.
The credibility of a BLS card rests entirely on that check having happened. It is the reason employers accept it, and the reason the AHA will not issue a Provider card without it.
It is the standard choice for anyone renewing, and for anyone working a clinical roster — see BLS for nurses. It also suits candidates who prefer to absorb material slowly, or who want to revisit a section three times without holding up a classroom, and anyone travelling in from another emirate who would rather make one short trip than spend a day at the centre.
Classroom is often the better choice for a first-time candidate with no clinical background, who benefits from the full instructor-led practice time before being assessed, and for a department training together, where a single on-site day certifies everyone at once.
Search for online BLS and you will find sites offering an instant printable certificate for a small fee, no practical component, no instructor. These are not AHA Provider cards. They are not recognised by UAE healthcare employers, and staff do get turned away at onboarding holding one.

No. The knowledge portion can be completed online through AHA HeartCode, but an AHA BLS Provider card is only issued after an instructor has assessed your compressions, ventilations and AED use on a manikin. Certificates sold without that hands-on check are not AHA cards and are rejected by UAE healthcare employers.
Yes, identical. Both produce an American Heart Association BLS Provider eCard valid for two years, with nothing on it to indicate which route you took, and nothing an employer or regulator could distinguish.
It varies by person, because the course is adaptive and responds to your answers. Someone renewing an existing card usually moves through it considerably faster than a first-time candidate. It does not have to be completed in one sitting.
Book the skills session close to finishing the online modules, while the material is fresh. Bring the completion certificate with you, on your phone is fine. If a long gap has opened up, it is worth revisiting the online scenarios before you attend.
Yes. Where a group has completed HeartCode online, we can run the skills assessments on site at your premises rather than having everyone travel. Email training@safetyfirstmed.ae with the headcount and we will arrange it.
Complete the AHA online modules in your own time, then a short hands-on skills session at our Abu Dhabi centre. Same two-year AHA Provider eCard as the classroom route.
