First Aid Practice Questions With Answers

Test what you remember before or after a first aid course. These questions were written by our instructors around the emergencies UAE first aiders meet most often.

Practice questions

1. What is the ambulance number in the UAE?

Answer: 998. 999 is the police; in an emergency either will help you.

2. A colleague has a deep cut on the arm that keeps bleeding through a pad. What do you do first?

Answer: press harder with more dressings, and use a tourniquet if pressure fails and bleeding is life-threatening. See severe bleeding.

3. How long should a burn be cooled?

Answer: with cool running water for at least 10 minutes (many guidelines say up to 20). No ice, butter or toothpaste. See burns first aid.

4. A worker outdoors in August becomes confused, stumbles and feels very hot to the touch. What is most likely?

Answer: heat stroke — call 998 and cool them immediately. See heat stroke.

5. Someone with a known nut allergy has swollen lips and is wheezing. What do you do?

Answer: help them use their adrenaline auto-injector and call 998. See anaphylaxis.

6. During a seizure, should you put something in the person’s mouth?

Answer: no. Protect them from injury, time the seizure, and place them on their side afterwards. See seizures.

7. A person with diabetes is shaky, sweaty and confused but can swallow. What helps?

Answer: sugar, such as glucose tablets or juice. See diabetic emergencies.

8. What does FAST stand for in stroke recognition?

Answer: Face, Arm, Speech, Time to call. See stroke.

9. Should you induce vomiting after someone swallows a cleaning product?

Answer: no. Call for advice and follow it. See poisoning.

10. Someone has fainted and is now breathing normally on the floor. What next?

Answer: keep them lying down, check for injury, and let them get up slowly. See fainting.

11. Should you straighten an obviously broken leg?

Answer: no. Support it in the position found and call for help. See fractures.

12. A child is pulled from a pool and is not breathing. What is especially important?

Answer: rescue breaths as part of CPR, and calling 998. See drowning.
