First-Time ACLS
Your first ACLS course can feel daunting: new drugs, rhythm strips and a Megacode where you lead the team. In practice, most first-timers pass comfortably. Here is what to expect and how to make it easier.
For first-timers
Choose classroom ACLS, finish the precourse self-assessment early, learn the cardiac arrest algorithm cold, and expect plenty of practice before you are tested. Instructors want you to pass.
We recommend classroom ACLS for a first certification: the cases are taught face to face and you practise each role before the Megacode. HeartCode suits people who already know the material.
It is more demanding than BLS, but it is not designed to trip you up. The hardest part for first-timers is usually leading: speaking clearly, assigning roles and thinking out loud. The Megacode guide explains exactly what instructors look for.
Expect to spend most of your time around a manikin and monitor, rotating through team roles. Ask questions during practice rather than waiting for the test. If a part is not passed first time, remediation is part of every AHA course.
Keep your eCard safe (see the ACLS certificate), note the renewal date, and practise the algorithms occasionally. The second time is much easier.
Treat the course as practice for a real arrest rather than an exam to survive. Volunteer for the team leader role in practice scenarios, make mistakes there, and let the instructor correct them before the Megacode.
