ACLS for ED & ICU Nurses
Nurses in emergency departments, intensive care, coronary care and cath labs are the clinicians most likely to notice deterioration first and to be first at the bedside when a patient arrests. That is why their units nearly always require an ACLS course certificate.
In short
Acute-care nurses in the UAE are usually required to hold ACLS as well as BLS. The skills that matter most in practice are rhythm recognition, defibrillator operation, drug preparation and working within a structured team.
In ICU and CCU the monitor often shows the problem first. Recognising a rhythm change, calling it clearly, starting CPR and preparing the defibrillator in the first minute is nursing work. See ACLS rhythms and defibrillation, cardioversion and pacing.
Coronary care adds acute coronary syndromes and post-arrest care to the daily workload; both are part of the ACLS syllabus.
ED nurses also see children, so most units require PALS alongside ACLS — see PALS vs ACLS.
We run on-site ACLS and stagger dates so cards do not all expire together. Individual nurses often choose HeartCode to fit training round shifts. Ward nurses usually need BLS rather than ACLS.
In an ICU arrest, the bedside nurse often recognises the rhythm, calls the arrest, starts compressions and brings the defibrillator before anyone else arrives. ACLS gives nurses the confidence to deliver the first shock under local policy and to hand over clearly when the team arrives.
