PALS for Family Doctors
In a family practice or urgent-care clinic, a critically ill child is rare — which is exactly why the skills fade. A PALS course helps clinic doctors spot the child who needs escalation and stabilise them until the ambulance arrives.

Clinic doctors see many children, few of them critically ill. PALS trains early recognition, first-line treatment and safe transfer. Many urgent-care and paediatric clinics require it; check your facility.

Clinic doctors who rarely manage emergencies usually do best with classroom PALS. Adult emergencies in the clinic are covered by ACLS and BLS.
Many children seen in clinic are sent home. Clear advice to parents about warning signs — breathing difficulty, drowsiness, poor feeding, reduced wet nappies — and when to return is part of keeping them safe. Parents who want practical skills can take a pediatric first aid course.
A concise handover with the child’s weight, observations, treatment given and times helps the receiving team act quickly.
