The AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course is designed for people with limited or no medical training. At SFMS it is a six-hour, instructor-led classroom course covering:
- The priorities, roles and responsibilities of a first aid rescuer.
- Recognising and responding to heart attack, stroke, breathing problems, choking, severe bleeding and shock.
- Controlling bleeding and bandaging.
- Using an epinephrine pen.
- Recognising common injuries and illnesses.
- High-quality CPR for adults, with child and infant CPR.
- Using an AED.
The course ends with a first aid skills demonstration and a CPR and AED skills test. Those who pass receive a Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course completion card, valid for two years.
Equipment and the first minutes
Training loses much of its value if people can’t find the kit when it matters. After the course, walk the site with your first aiders and check:
- Where the first aid kits are and who restocks them.
- Where the nearest AED is and whether it is signposted from corridors and stairwells.
- That AED pads and batteries are in date.
- That the site address and emergency numbers are displayed where staff can see them.
