First Aid vs MHFA
The names are similar and HR teams often ask whether one replaces the other. It does not: a first aid course prepares you for physical emergencies, while Mental Health First Aid prepares you to support someone experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
The short answer
Physical first aid: bleeding, burns, collapse, CPR and AED. Mental Health First Aid: recognising signs of distress, starting a supportive conversation, and guiding the person towards professional help. Many employers train some staff in each.

Some situations need both: a panic attack that looks like a heart problem, a person who has taken an overdose, or someone injured and distressed after an accident. Physical safety comes first — call 998 when in doubt — then emotional support.
Workplace wellbeing programmes increasingly name mental health first aiders alongside physical first aiders. The two roles complement each other and are often held by different people with different strengths.
There is no single rule. Many organisations base the number of physical first aiders on headcount, shifts and risk, and appoint a smaller group of mental health first aiders spread across departments so that everyone knows someone approachable to talk to.
Neither makes you a clinician or counsellor. Both teach you to help until professional support takes over.
